Why purity prices the can
Look at a loaded can from the street and you do not see the pieces. You see one colour, because a mosaic read whole averages out — the light coming off a heap is the area-weighted average of the light coming off its parts. A clean concrete can reads as one grey. A mixed can reads as mud.
The gate charges the same way. A clean load goes to a recycler or to inert fill at a cheap per-tonne rate. Past the published threshold there is nothing to separate economically, so the whole can is re-graded and the whole can is charged at £186.00. That is the entire pricing argument, and it is why your invoice sometimes does not match your quote.
Every colour on this site is that average, computed. The mud below is not a colour anybody chose — it is this yard's six streams weighted by the tonnes it actually took in last year. Mixed the other way, as a stack of filters rather than a mosaic, the same load computes #887a5c: darker, and wrong by ΔE76 8.34. A heap is not a glaze.
