Most household jobs fit a 4 yard skip with room to spare. That is about forty full bin bags, or the whole of a bathroom — suite, tiles, boxing and all. If the job is mostly garden waste, choose the garden rate and pay £20 less: we compost it rather than sort it.

A 2 yard mini skip is for the jobs that feel too small for a skip and too big for the car: one room of rubbish, a small garden tidy, the last of a move. It is narrow enough to sit on most single drives with a car still beside it.

A 6 yard skip is where household becomes builder. Choose it for a kitchen strip-out or a big garden, and when in doubt about 4 or 6, go up. The difference is £40; a second skip is never less than £160.

Where it can go

Anywhere with firm ground and a clear line for the lorry to reverse. The driver needs about 3 metres of width and nothing overhead lower than 5 metres — watch out for phone lines and trees. If the only space is on the road, we apply for the permit and bring the lights; see permits.

Filling it well

Break things down. Flat-pack furniture, snap timber, bag the loose small stuff and put the heavy things in first so the weight sits low. Fill it level with the top rail and no higher, so we can sheet it for the road.
